Cat for Adoption

It is with heavy hearts that we post this . . . but we really need a favor from our friends and family. We are looking for someone who is willing to adopt our very charming, 16-year old cat Missy. We realize that people do not normally adopt 16-year-old cats; however, we are hoping that someone out there is willing to do this as a personal favor to us . . . because we are your dear friends or loving relatives (insert guilt trip here). You can even consider it a baby shower gift for our new baby--aren't we shameless!

Missy is an old but sweet tempered blue-cream tortoiseshell cat that I adopted as a tiny kitten. She's been with me through a lot of life and many moves! We would really love to keep her through to her natural end; however, it is especially difficult to keep any indoor pet in a house with young toddlers . . . and our family is still growing. Soon we'll have a third baby, and we expect and hope for more to follow.

While in good health, we think Missy has only a few years left in her but, unfortunately, the next few years in our house are not the most hospitable for a sweet, elderly cat. Without naming names, some members of our family are too young to know how to be gentle with animals or that cat food is not for human consumption. Also because we're in these early parenting years, I am quite exhausted with pregnancy and mothering little kids, but with no big kids to help yet, so I am fatigued at having to remember to feed and water the cat, clean her litter box, remind the children to be gentle, and so forth. Also, Missy has been an indoor cat all her life and wouldn't survive outdoors, so moving her outside isn't an option we can consider.

In full disclosure, Missy does have a habit of scratching at furniture. I used to glue on those Soft Paws claw covers which worked great; however, to be frank, I gave up due to lack of energy.

But, all that said, she is a sweet cat. Missy is perched on the couch above my shoulder, purring madly, as I type this. She is highly tolerant of our overly friendly children and I don't think she has scratched them once in these four years. She is still quite healthy and I haven't had to take her to the vet in years. She does all her pottying neatly in a litter box. She sleeps under the bed most of every day, so she doesn't demand much. All that said, we imagine that the primary reason anyone would adopt her from us truly would be a favor to Chris and me, out of love for us.

Chris travels often for work and would be happy to escort Missy on an airplane to deliver her if someone far-away were willing to take her.

  2. I emailed my aunt who lives in Boston on the chance she would want another cat. She already has at least two, but you never know! She's the only cat lover that I can think of.

  3. I am so sorry I am so far away: I have been petless since my last cat
died (I feed several strays & keep a hole in the pond ice so they, and
other 'wildlife' have a winter watering hole) -- but even if Chris had a trip north, even a cabin trip (vs the cargo hold) would be 'way too stresful for an elderly cat.

  4. I hope you find a taker! Pets are exceptionally difficult to have in a family with small children. We had to get rid of our dog after she bit our rambunctious boy toddler at the time...
