When I had first told John that Sr. Agnes was coming (and who she was), he paused thoughtfully and replied, "Well, I want to play fighting sticks with her." He is always trying to play fighting sticks, which is sword fighting with cardboard tubes, but I usually decline because he accidentally hits my hands. I laughed and told him we'd just have to see if Sister would play fighting sticks with him. Indeed, this morning, she was a real sport and played with gusto!
Later, she took John to play tennis (three-year-old style). Then while I stayed home so Mary could nap, Chris, John, and Sister we made a Holy Hour (having shown up for Mass, to discover it cancelled due to Labor Day), before we all met for lunch at a restaurant and then took Sister to the airport. Chris and John did the airport run, then went shopping for camping equipment at Wal-Mart, so I had a very rare afternoon at home alone with Mary. She's so young, that I let myself turn on the television during the daytime (watching "I Love Lucy" and junky "Oprah"!) and we girls ate buttered popcorn. It was so decadent to just put my feet up and not do anything productive!
Chris is planning to take John on a father-son camping weekend organized by some local Catholics, called "Camping with Christ." He hasn't told John all the details yet (so you don't either!), just in case it falls through, so he's been building up for John the vague idea that they'll go camping "sometime." Today, they bought a six-man tent (with the idea that the whole family will probably go camping at some point).

Daddy set up the tent in the bonus room and the kids promptly filled it with bean bags and books.
Tonight, Chris and John are going to "camp" in the bonus room. The tent has been set up with inflatable mattresses, pillows, and soft blankies. The boys are up there right now, watching television together! I'm not sure if John or his Daddy is more excited about this. There's a chance they are going to take up residence up there and ask me to deliver meals to them.
How did the night go?? That is awesome!! I used to camp with my dad when I was a little girl. Now he has an ENORMOUS camper LOL! Cla and I often say we wish we had more property so that he could take Ben camping in the yard LOL
ReplyDeleteWell, how did it go?
ReplyDeleteThey look like they are having fun. :-)
John lasted till 3:30 a.m., when he woke up and asked Daddy if he could move to his usual bed. He wasn't crying or anything, and Chris just moved him. This morning John isn't articulating why he wanted to move, just that "sometimes I like camping, and sometimes I don't, it just depends."
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoy camping and get a lot of use out of our tent (although I haven't been in a couple years...wasn't interested in going when I was hugely pregnant with Jamie, and now we're waiting until he's a few months older before taking him). Emma's been going and loving it since 18 months old! Good family fun...
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat idea! I have to laugh at John's comment "sometimes he likes it and sometimes he doesn't." At least he tried it, and 3:30 is pretty decent to make it in the tent!
