California Day 10

This morning started with outdoor play in the back yard, then I put the children in the car early to take an extra long drive to my niece's birthday party so they would nap a little bit--the party falling right at their normal nap time (noon).

This was perhaps John's first structured birthday party, and it was at Chuck E. Cheese! Maddie has turned six!

John with Grandpa

John really enjoyed himself. Mary would have enjoyed herself more, but I kept her on my back most of the time because I couldn't chase two little ones through the cacophony and noise that is Chuck E. Cheese. Toward the end of the two-hour party, John was revving up into wild behavior and was not in control of himself, so we couldn't linger. After we left and stepped into the quiet parking lot, John grabbed my hand and spontaneously said, "Thanks, Mama, that was very great."

With the raffle tickets John earned playing arcade games, he "bought" five Tootsie Rolls and one plastic ladybug. On the way home, I let him eat two of the candies, and he really surprised me with his calm logic from the back seat: "Mama, I turned three, so that is why I should have three chocolates." The children ended up sleeping on the ride home, but it was still a rough remainder of the day for John because he wasn't rested.

Once back at the house, we spent most of the late afternoon and early evening playing in the back yard. Aunt Stella blew bubbles for the little ones.

My photographs didn't capture the bubbles, but Mary did learn how to blow them very well!
