Creative (Rookie) Mother of the Day

Problem: Kids (especially bigger one) are whining and wanting attention and wanting to "dooooo something, Mama!" while Mama wants to make dinner in the afternoon so it will be all ready in the evening.

Idea: Mama will set up the children with finger painting, which they will then do together, cooperatively, cheerfully, and neatly while Mama prepares stuffed shells and sausages nearby. By doing thus, children will have a wholesome good time and Mama will win Creative Mother of the Day award.

Reality: Mama lugs easel from upstairs into the kitchen, puts smocks on children, shows them how to paint.

Soon there is paint in each child's hair, as put their by the other child.

A stool is retrieved to be able to paint the top of the paper.

Mama ends up being called over a half dozen times to refill the bowls of paint, to break up sharing squabbles, and to stop the little one from eating the paint. Then the children declare themselves done, so Mama washes their hands in the bathroom, thus necessitating that the whole bathroom be wiped free of paint. The smocks must be washed. The kitchen floor must be mopped. And the children must be bathed.

How much progress on those stuffed shells do you think Mama made through all of this?

It was a good idea, but a rookie mother move!

  1. For what it's worth, I think the picture they painted is quite pretty! :-) And I'm sure they had fun doing it...for five minutes or so. That's about my kiddo's attention span...

  2. it's difficult to keep them busy, i agree. but i must confess that when it comes to dinnertime - and 3yo is not outside with sibs - this mama resorts to popping in a movie for some brief peace.

  3. Shelly: Yes, while I make dinner tends to be the one regular time per day they get to watch a DVD. And, yes, after the painting fiasco, I popped in their current favorite cartoon of "Our Lady at Fatima."

  4. Maybe I'm a rookie too, b/c for 2 days in a row I have been sewing, and Jireh wanted to do crafts from a book of Bible story crafts, and I told her, "Do whatever you want, but if you need ME to do or get or help with anything, you can forget it, so pick something else or draw." And what ended up happening... they needed me every 10 minutes. And I not only did it once, but TWO DAYS IN A ROW. :)

  6. Katherine, you've been at this mothering business full time for almost 4 years, right? I don't think you qualify as a rookie anymore. :-)

That doesn't mean we won't learn, make mistakes, and get better at our craft (by God's grace!) but you're doing a great job and your kids are blessed to have you for a mother!!!

  7. Sharon: Oh, that is sweet! But I remain a rookie with whatever my older child is going through. I am a rookie with a three-and-a-half-year-old!
