A March Visit

On Friday night, Chris' parents arrived for a spontaneous weekend visit. The next morning I had a long-planned date for a ladies' breakfast sans children. My friend Marla and I went to breakfast at a diner so hip I wasn't sure a boring housewife like me would be allowed in. We had delicious food and thoughtful conversation, noticeably not interrupted by any children shouting, screaming, throwing food, jumping in the chair, or asking to nurse.

Meanwhile I knew that Mary would be tired for her morning nap during my absence and I worried what would happen since she falls asleep only with me. Chris wanted to give it a try and he was successful! He laid down with her, she did not cry, and it took her all of ten minutes to fall asleep (mid-crawl!). I feel light as air knowing that Mary, now at 15 months, eats superbly well, likes being with her daddy and brother (doesn't cry when I leave), and now she can fall asleep without me if necessary! Think of how I can get out for a couple of hours of mother's R&R more often than once every many months!

After breakfast, Marla and I walked next door to a huge, well-organized used bookstore. It was an absolute delight of a store and I walked out with this tall stack of old-timey children's books for a bargain. John is thrilled, especially with the science books (dinosaurs, birds, airplanes, etc.) and the Curious George books (which he calls "perfect books").

Pop-Pops read the new airplane book to John, offering helpful insight since Pop-Pops was a navigator in the Air Force. Note John's intense concentration and furrowed brow.

  1. How wonderful! I'm glad that you got to enjoy some much deserved alone time. Will cries occasionally when I leave, but not usually. I love when I come home, though. He always runs to me with a big hug and says "Mommy, I'm so glad that you're home!". It is so precious!
