I'd like to be watching on CraigsList or other used furniture markets for a rectangular shaped work table and chairs, quite possibly a low one that is sized for children. (Homeschool moms: What kind of work surface do you like in the early years? One large table or individual desks? Small for children? If so, does mom just sit next to it in an adult-sized chair?)
I like what you've done! I recently rearranged our playroom/school room set-ups. I need to finish taking pictures of our new playroom/living room, but the school room is on my blog.
ReplyDeleteWe have a square table for the boys to work upstairs and a train table downstairs for other messy projects (along with the kitchen table). I think I'd always prefer a table like that vs. desks. I would like to replace the small table we have with one that will seat more than two kids soon. I usually sit in one of the kid chairs or on a footstool or just kneel.
I see lots of school tables and desks on our Craigslist (someone was just selling school maps and globes too!), so you'll be sure to find something just perfect. :-)
Katherine, I like using grown-up height tables for school work w/ Sarah (1st grade) b/c it's less accessable to toddlers. but giving Mary's climbing abilities that probably wouldn't help you out much :-)
ReplyDeleteLove the room division idea!
I really like the room division! We work around a common table (kids from Rosie on up) - it's actually our dining room table. So I guess it's an "adult sized" table. For "fun" stuff we are on the floor. Depends on what we are doing!
ReplyDeleteNicely done! I looks great and it is so nice that you have such a big space to work with.
ReplyDeleteMy boys really like having their own desks. I buy them at thrift stores and they have the storage underneath. I don't like ones with desks that lift or chairs attached. I like the desks because it is their own space and they know to self-start certain subjects and those books are kept in their desks.
I would think for the younger grades a table (whatever size you choose) would work best since the lower grades are a lot of crafty based things that require spreading out a bit.
ReplyDeleteBen has a child size table and chairs that he loves. He keeps himself very busy coloring and doing puzzles and whatever else at his little table. We have it in the dining room.
oh i love the shelves used as a room divider too - with all that storage!! you've inspired me :)
ReplyDeletenicely done!
