Monday was the first time Mary had ridden in a grocery cart. John wore his Epiphany crown for the occasion. No, not really, he just insisted on wearing his crown for his own reasons. But when he saw that there were two seats in the grocery cart, he suggested that Mary sit next to him and persisted until I agreed. It made for an extremely cute scene that made me feel so blessed with these two, but by the end of our long trip, of course, there was some shoving going on in which John would pretend to be leaning over to do something but was really shoving Mary. Or he'd say, "Give me some space," while pushing her way over to the side. But I had great success with Chris' trick of asking John if we need to go talk to the store manager!
I may have to try that store manager trick! Had an exhausting trip to IKEA with Theo yesterday, complete with wailing, howling, and a smack in the face (Theo to me, not the other way around!). Wasn't sure what to do for a timeout, since what Theo REALLY wanted was to get out of the cart, so taking him out for a timeout would've been rewarding him. Hmmm...when he's a little older and knows what a store manager is, perhaps I can borrow that trick and use it to my advantage!
ReplyDeleteI think the suggestion to talk to the store mgr was bequeathed to him by his maternal parent. Hmmmm, I didn't realize the effect was so lasting that he would remember to use it on his own child! The other trick I used was to give them 3 items from my list to put in the cart...their favorite cereals, snacks, etc. This was crowd control with 5 boys! love, mom
