Chris and I find the word "gluten" very funny. I don't know why. We make jokes about gluten-free products and we stretch out the word so it sounds like "glooooten." (Yes, even though we know that celiac disease is a real and challenging experience.)
So, the other day I saw a package of brownie mix in the health food section and I grabbed it without looking very closely. I made the brownies and they were decidedly not good, which is when I noticed that the mix was "gluten-free." I told Chris that the brownies weren't very good and he agreed. So, later Chris played a little joke on me and he trained John to come find me and say, "Mama, these brownies need some gluten!" We all had a good chuckle.
That brings us to today, several weeks later, with no discussion of gluten in the meanwhile. John and I were talking about something concerning bread and asked me sincerely, "Is the bread broken? Does it need some gluten?"
Maybe you had to be there, but it struck me as so funny.
Katherine, my kids find the word "gluten" to be hysterically funny too. ??? At least we can laugh about it now! Mary was seriously ill for almost two years before we got the diagnosis for Celiac. She just turned six and is the height of a 4 year old, and the weight of a 3 year old. We are hoping her growth is not stunted permanently. BTW, GF foods taste much better if eating any gluten makes you really sick!

Alicia: I know! I think of your Mary often, actually, when I see the label "gluten-free." I remember that she was so ill before you figured it out. I know that the new availability of gluten-free food is a GOD-SEND for people with celiac disease. But we still like to laugh at the word "glooooo-ten"!
