Disaster Averted

I allowed John to eat his fish sticks for lunch using toothpicks, as toothpicks make any eating more fun. In the midst of lunch, Mary had a potty situation that required attention, so I walked into the bathroom right next to the kitchen, within earshot of John. Everything sounded fine and then I ushered the kids upstairs for naps. Only later did Chris discover and show me what John did with those toothpicks. Glad they weren't metal.

  1. Oh dear, that is both terrifying and funny! It amazes me how each day is one big "disaster averted!"

  3. You probably know my kids set a fire in my home recently. After that I realized I hadn't adequately taught them about household safety - really the REASONS so they knew it was important and not just one more thing on mom's list of annoyances. So I got the idea to check out the library for books and videos on safety including fire safety. I'm not sure if John would be too young for that, but maybe not - he's almost 3. It might help to start the safety indoctrination early like I didn't. :-) Now my kids are little police and tell me when I'm yanking on the cord instead of the plug (a safety no-no according to their videos!). :-)

  4. Sarah: That's a good idea. So far, I've had it pretty easy because John is cautious by nature and he likes to stay in very close proximity to me. The way he pays attention to television shows and can tell me the plot of the episode, I bet he'd do well watching some of those safety videos. I've become such a fan of the public library!
