This is the hawk who we believe lives somewhere in our yard. He was sitting in a crepe myrtle, only about five feet off the ground, outside our kitchen window. We call him a hawk, but we don't really know what kind of bird it is. Can anyone help identify it?

John looking pretty cool in his sunglasses.
I can't be certain from this angle, but it looks a lot like the red-tailed hawk I used to work with at the zoo. Or it could be a red-shouldered hawk. Gorgeous bird!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure it's a Cooper's Hawk :-) And I'm jealous of your summer weather!!!!! It's been rainy and yucky here in New England for about a week now!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the hawk suggestions, ladies! Yes, Rebecca, it is projected to be 89 on Saturday.

It looks more like a red tail hawk to me from the photos but the article in sky-hunters says it's probably a cooper's hawk in the summer.
And I have no idea why I looked those up. My mom would laugh at me. I once told her I had better things to do than birdwatch. lol
Oh my! That is a great picture - That's great you had your camera ready! Ava loves her First Communion gifts, by the way! She has a funny story to tell you about the pin. She attached it to her Mass tie - part of her uniform. She was very excited to get it and the rest of her gift. Thank you notes on the way!!
ReplyDeleteWe have a "hawk" too! I think it lives in the neighborhood. It visits us from time to time. One of the workers at our house said it was a falcon. ::shrug::
