John has some cute and humorous sayings these days.
"Phew!" He says this after any great exertion with a dramatic swipe of his hand across his brow.
"Right there." He likes to point out emphatically that something is right there. This morning we were building blocks and I put a block somewhere. He moved it and said, "No, right there."
"That sound, Mom?" He asks me continuously to identify that sound. I often have to ask follow-up questions because the sound will be as subtle as the air conditioner kicking on (yes, it's been 80 degrees here this week, so the AC has been on!).
"Stuck!" His latest buzzword is "stuck" and it can mean that he is stuck somewhere or that he cannot effectuate a movement. Perhaps he is trying to shove me out of the way so he can get to some illicit object, so he'll start screaming, "stuck!" Or he can't open the door to the garage because it has a child device on the door knob: "stuck!" A few evenings ago, we took a family walk with John in his wagon, buckled in for safety even though he did not want to be buckled. (Once he leapt from a moving wagon because he had no clue about movement and gravity and falling onto the asphalt.) For the entire 40 minutes, he whined unceasingly, "stuck stuck stuck stuck stuck . . ."
"Sing song this!" John likes when I read him nursery rhymes, and he likes it even better if I can sing them. He will point to the picture in a book of nursery rhymes and request, "sing song this!" Now he points to all pictures and asks me to "sing song this" and I have to explain that there isn't always a song. This afternoon he pointed to a review in our Catholic newspaper about a book concerning Communist infiltration; he wanted me to "sing song this" so--after the fourth request--I started reading it to him, and he actually stood there for five minutes, listening with interest to all the words he didn't understand.
Very sweet...I like these.
ReplyDeleteMy little darling is saying things like "lame" and "whatever" now (gee, thanks my darling husband!).
I LOVE it - especially his paying attention to you reading the article. Too funny.
ReplyDeleteDavid and I recently rewatched "Sneakers." I wonder if John is studying to be like the character Whistler, who can identify any sound. :)
That is really funny b/c Joseph said "stuck" all the time and used it in the same way as John starting a couple months ago maybe... whenever he first became able to say the word.
ReplyDeleteHe's also started asking "What's that noise?" quite a bit. I wonder if kids that age are especially attuned to new sounds or something? I think I heard another toddler asking that question recently too.
