Dressing Himself

John has begun pulling out his own clothing and trying to dress himself. He's shown interest in dressing himself for months, but we haven't actively encouraged it because it's easier for us right now to dress him ourselves. (But I know moms with lots of kids who encourage self-dressing early because, obviously, that is easier for them.) Here John tried to put two shirts on top of the pajamas in which we had dressed him:
John got stuck with this shirt around his legs after I dressed him for the day:
Finally he got the pajama shirt over his regular shirt plus some dandy socks on his hands:

  1. Toddler self dressing causes the parents to, of necessity, simply give up any sense of pride in their child's appearance, lol. I have been allowing Christina to dress herself in order to support her autonomy wherever possible. I have literally gone out with the kids with Christina wearing an inside out and backwards pajama top, one of the older girls' skirts, and shoes put on the wrong feet. She is so proud of her achievement! At least in the winter I was able to hide some of it with a jacket, but it's warming up... :-)

  3. That's fun! Socks on the hands is a common sight around here! :)

I love when Emma dresses herself, and she thinks she's such a big girl when she does it. And amazingly enough, she does really well with the color coordination...haven't had any real outlandish ensembles yet, but like Sarah Faith's Christina, shoes are often on the opposite feet.
