Hard-Hearted Against Hard Soles

Apparently, John is not ready to wear hard-soled shoes.
He has outgrown his Robeez-style soft leather brown shoes, so I've been hunting for a replacement. Target never seems to carry them in the 12-18 month size. I could order a different brand online and spend a lot more money. While in Target yesterday, it occurred to me to look in the real shoe department, not the infant section. To my surprise, John is now a big-enough boy that I can buy his shoes in the real shoe department! I bought him the above hard-soled, casual sandals and a nicer pair of medium-soft soled shoes. One thing funny I noticed was that, of the four end cap displays of toddler shoes, each end cap contained about four and a half rows of girl shoes (so adorable) and half a row on the bottom of boy shoes (really plain). Anyway, I tried the sandals on John in the store and he burst into tears. I know they fit perfectly and are not injuring him, so I bought them anyway and tried them this morning. He wailed in terror and would not move his feet. Bad Mommy took a humorous photo before relieving him of his predicament.

  1. Awww...poor little tortured soul! :( You sure are mean! ;)

Really cute shoes. Glad you were able to find some, since you're right, there are SO many little girl shoes and so few for boys.

  2. Carli cries too with her sandals like these, but she wears her light up sneakers fine! :-) Good luck!

How many teeth does John have? Carli didn't start cutting her 1st til 16 months old... now at 18 1/2 mos, she is cutting 4 at the same time....

  3. Mariah: Hhhmmm, I wonder if our babies are bothered by sort of seeing shoes but sort of seeing bare toes, as if something is horribly wrong with the image? I will have to try him in some hard-soled, closed-toe shoes as an experiment.

Re: teeth, John has his four incisors and his four first-year molars. He does not have his canines yet or his second-year molars. In fact, he hasn't cut a new tooth since February, I think.

  4. Poor baby! He looks so grown-up, though! I like his shoes too. As an aside, I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing the huge disparity in choices between girls and boys shoes and attire. Finding clothes for DS is always a challenge.

Anyway, we just bought our DS (22 mo.) his first hard-soled sandals and sneakers. Between the shoes, potty learning, and wearing his first pair of denim shorts, he is such a little boy I cannot STAND it!

    WHERE ARE OUR BABIES??

  5. Okay, I'm not comparing sweet John to my dog, but I have to say that Luna (our pug) does the EXACT same thing when I put an outfit on her--she plants her feet, won't move, and looks at me like I'm torturing her! And, like you, I have to grab the camera and record the moment for posterity. ;-)

Hope John decides the shoes aren't so bad. I think they're very cute, myself!

  6. Katherine,

I got mine used to sandals by having them wear them with socks for a while (a little tacky but comforting for them). It worked for mine...maybe for your John, too.

  7. Katherine,

I have DEFINITELY noticed, especially at Target, the difference between selection for girl vs. boy! And I noticed it in the shoe section just like you because I had been desparately trying to find something to put on Ben's feet that wouldn't fall off (even socks don't stay on). It was truly annoying. Since the warmer weather is here now I just gave up until Fall. He goes barefoot.

Babies R Us had a very big selection of boys and girls shoes of all sizes that were on sale for great prices if you want to check it out. Maybe cute little "Croc" type sandals would be a nice inbetween for him?
