For the 78th time since giving birth to John, I'm trying to rally myself to commit to a consistent exercise regime. I thought that having a bit of public accountability via this blog might help me with the effort this time. I'm not trying to become a beauty queen or an athlete--hardly!--I just want to be healthier. I recently got some numbers back from a doctor's appointment and they weren't great. My cholesterol is a bit high (although that is normal for nursing mothers), my blood sugar numbers are high (probably because of my vice of constant eating of sweets), and, while my weight is reasonable, my BMI is at the upper cusp of "normal" and my body fat percentage is unhealthy. (In fact, to my horror, according to the American Council on Exercise guidelines, my body fat percentage is obese.)

My Jogging Partner
My bundled-up jogging partner this morning:
I think it is important to decrease my fat, increase my muscle mass, lower my sugars, and improve my cardiovascular health. Some general fitness--even walking a couple of miles daily--is so much better for pregnant women and greatly cuts down on C-sections. As I hope to go through more pregnancies, if it is God's will, I want to avoid getting more and more unhealthy with each one as I pack on more fat and become more sedentary.
So, those are my reasons to start exercising consistently. Now, let me have some fun and list the reasons why I hate it and don't want to do so! I have brainstormed how I can build an exercise routine within the duties of my vocation and it's tough, as every mother knows. I have to create a routine that I can do without any assistance from Chris because of the travel demands of his job. I would much prefer to jog inside on my treadmill, but I cannot figure out how to do that while monitoring John safely and his naps are far too unpredictable for me to jog while he's asleep (he might wake four times during a 1-2 hour nap, if you get the picture). Those who know me will know that I'm not interested in using a fitness center and putting John in the center's daycare. After much thinking, I am left with the only viable option being to jog outdoors with John in his jogging stroller.
Reasons Why I Hate Jogging Outdoors (in no particular order):
1. I am a wimp about bad weather (i.e., too cold, too hot, windy, rainy).
2. The treadmill encourages me to maintain a rapid heart rate, but when outdoors by myself I repeatedly slip into walking slowly instead of jogging briskly.
3. I am embarrassed to exercise in front of other people (the sin of pride).
4. Now I have to buy some cold-weather exercise clothing (sweat pants and such) because all my exercise clothing is for my temperature-controlled home.
5. The streets beyond our neighborhood are dangerous and unfit for pedestrians, so I am limited to staying within my neighborhood, which is boring. Also the streets in the neighborhood are hilly (including one we call "cardiac hill"), which is more difficult. To get beyond the neighborhood for a change of scenery means hauling John and the stroller somewhere in the van, which is a hassle.
6. I'd much rather pass the time jogging while watching television indoors than in the dull silence and same scenery of my neighborhood.
7. Exercising means I have to change my whole routine of getting ready (showered, dressed, hair, makeup) and either do things twice or forgo getting pretty first thing in the morning or some combination of the two. Whatever I do, it will be a hassle.
8. Oh, I know I have more reasons than this. I thought of more than this list while jogging this morning! Maybe I'll edit this post and add in more as I remember them.
I did succeed in jog-walking briskly probably 2-2.5 miles this morning. Afterward I did some stretches and sit-ups. Apparently John has never watched me do sit-ups because he found Mama to be absolutely hilarious. He would laugh at me, then fling his body onto mine (while I was doing the sit-ups) like he was a World Wide Wrestler. Then if I stopped doing sit-ups, he'd start crouching up and down in excitement, asking me to do them again, just so that he could jump on me again . . . . I'll admit, it did make doing sit-ups more fun!
Would any other moms out there like to contribute their creative reasons for why they hate exercise and it is too inconvenient? We can all have a whine fest together!
EDIT: I see now that what I really need is a Hawaii Chair to help me exercise while sitting down.

OK, I hate exercise because it makes me tired and I am already tired. Of course, I understand that eventually I would have more energy if I stuck to it, but I don't have the energy to stick to it in the first place. You see, it's a catch-22. Also, it's usually boring. If I could do something like take a dance class for exercise that would be better, but alas, I too have a little one that I need to look after. Finally, sometimes exercise actually hurts and that's never cool. So there you go - a nice dose of whining from me to you! :0)
ReplyDeleteKatherine, you pretty much summed it up. About number 4, though, at least in the South, all those winter outdoor exercise clothes are 50%-75% off now. :)
ReplyDeleteIt might be a little more fun if you check into a Mom and Baby walking class (I'm sorry I can't remember what they are called). They will probably meet 3 days a week at a park and would provide "adult" conversations to go along with the pain of exercise. I'll email you if I remember the name.
I applaud your efforts, btw. I am an exercise Wimp, too.

Katherine,
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to Strollerstrides in Atlanta. I have no idea if it would be of interest to you or not or if any of the locations and times would work for you. But, at least it might help with the exercise boredom part.

Exercise is awful because it requires sweating!! That is a good enough reason right there! And I know how STINKING hot the summers in Georgia are..I wouldn't leave the house to get the mail let alone jog in it! ;)
ReplyDeleteBut, be thankful you can jog I am already too much of a blob to work up that sort of stamina!! LOL
Exercise has always been the "8-letter word" to me. Like someone great once said, every time I get the urge to exercise, I lie down and rest until the feeling leaves.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why you can't just put him in a play pen while you are on the treadmill. Seems like if he has that much fun watching you he would be ok with that. Especially if the TV was on?
The one time I took up running for more than a minute was when I was interested in this guy who encouraged me to do it. LOL.
By the way why not look into biking? You could always do the kind with the seat on the back. Might give you more places to go?
Also... who says you have to do it at the same time every day? Seriously just grab 10 or 20 minutes whenever you see the opportunity. The fact is, a shorter but more intense workout does more to burn fat and boost metabolism than a longer, less intense one. The longer less intense workout is good for cardiovascular whatever but if you are looking to be "fit" not just "healthy" you could do a really hard workout in 15 minutes or less.
I am guessing you are like me, and there are plenty of opportunities you COULD take but you would RATHER be doing something else, so you choose to do something else. If it's really going to be a priority for you, just choose to do the exercise instead of the something else. It is oh so easy to think of excuses (I used to bother thinking of them, but now I am just content with "I don't want to and you can't make me" which has the virtue of being honest :-)) but they are just that, excuses. People do what they WANT to do and "somehow" the other stuff gets pushed out.
So, that was either motivating or very demotivating. LOL.
I like all the whining so far, ladies! I especially agree with the problem that I'm *already* tired and exercise will make me *more* tired.
ReplyDeleteAshley: I just bought some clothing, including exercise tees for $3.60! No Strollerstrides within 25 miles of me, as far as I can tell.
ReplyDeleteSarah: John won't tolerate being in a play pen or even being locked on the other side of the baby gate. I've tried many times and without completely leaving him to cry it out, he's just hysterical about it. TV doesn't seem to engage him yet, he still ignores it.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great idea to grab 10, 20 minutes of exercise as I can. But then I get back to the problem of the clothing I'm wearing and that I've already done hair and makeup. I can't truly work up a sweat in a skirt, so then I'd have to be in exercise clothing (sweats) all day, which isn't attractive. There, we can add that to my list of Reasons Why Not.
Oh, and you can afford not to exercise because, when you're not pregnant, your figure is naturally slim and beautiful! And your body fat percentage isn't "obese"! :(
