1. Today I took some Christmas candy that was just sitting around--Hershey's chocolate kisses and Ghiradelli peppermint bark--and melted it in two separate batches, then coated some leftover pretzels in the chocolate. A whole new taste treat was created. I like to say waste not, want not. Who knew that making chocolate pretzels could be so virtuous?
2. This afternoon a strange pop and sizzle alerted me to the fact that I had forgotten about the pot of water I had set to boiling. I had burned off the two cups of water who knows how long ago, during which time I'd changed over some laundry and nursed John to sleep, peaceably going about my business while risking burning down the house. This is the second time I've done something absentminded like that lately. No good at all. So, does anyone know if I've ruined our pot?
3. In case anybody missed it in the comments section, Chris snuck out at 10:30 p.m. one night (I didn't hear a thing) and bought me a Dirt Devil Broom Vac. I love it and it makes cleaning the kitchen floor messes so easy. I never in a million years thought I'd be a woman who gets so excited about receiving the gift of a homemaking appliance, but I am one now!
I am TOTALLY one of those women who gets excited by new appliances!!!!!! HAHAHA Look at you go girlfriend!!!!! And kudos to Chris for surprising you with the Dirt Devil! What a thoughtful husband you have :-)
ReplyDeleteA few weeks ago I came back to the kitchen to find my non-whistling kettle had been sitting there so long on the electric stove that the entire bottom coating had melted off into a molten puddle under the burner. I touched it with a wooden spoon which started to go on fire. When it cooled it formed a large kidney bean shaped piece of metal (and a couple of shards) which I could just pick up and throw out.. :-) THAT kettle was definitely ruined.
ReplyDeleteWhether yours is, depends on the type of pot. If it's stainless steel, if it looks good it's probably ok. If it was any kind of anodized metal you may have heated it so the metal will now leach into food. I would be careful with anything aluminum or nonstick.
Sarah: How scary about your kettle! I'm so glad nothing worse happened.
ReplyDeleteMy pot is: "The set features a triple layer clad base of stainless steel, aluminum, and copper permanently bound together to ensure fast and even heat distribution, rounded off by a beautiful and easy to clean stainless steel exterior and tempered glass lids."

So, hhhmmm, I don't know where that leaves me.
I would think with All-Clad you would be okay, but I'm no expert.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet it's fine. If it hasn't started scraping off, or the underneath layers showing through the stainless steel on the inside of the pot, I can't imagine what harm it would do.
ReplyDeleteYou could call the manufacturer if you're still worried. (With all your down time. LOL)
Sarah: That's a great idea to call the manufacturer! I don't think I'd have thought of that.
ReplyDeleteKatherine,
ReplyDeleteYes, yes... I agree with Sarah and Rebecca. We had a similar incident at one of our nuclear facilities, which of course are for only peaceful means I might add. It was really quite comical. The whole thing was ruined. You should have seen the looks on the scientists' faces. :-) Sometimes it is hard to administer beatings while you are laughing so hard.
That apple pie sure does look good however.
Enjoy your new broom!

I know how you feel about getting excited about appliances! This year, I received a crock pot for Christmas, and while several years ago I would have turned my nose up at it, this year, I think it was my favorite gift! I promptly ran out for a new cookbook, and I've put it to use several times.
ReplyDeleteThat broom vac looks pretty cool. How sweet of your husband to sneak out to get it for you.
