Sleepy Swinging

This morning John fell asleep in his swing, which he's done perhaps three times in his whole life. Chris was cooking breakfast and had to set down John for a moment. When he turned back, John was asleep with his favorite Itsy Bitsy Spider book in his mouth! It seems more common that babies love their swings and fall asleep in them, but John has never liked his swing, especially if it was moving. (Maybe it's because he knew that gently swinging in Mama's arms as she walks is so much better!)

Sounds that scare my baby boy: plastic bag crinkling, foil crinkling, water running in a metal sink, ice cubes clattering, paper crunching (which makes lying on the paper-covered doctor's examining table John's great nightmare).

What's Cookin'? Last Saturday I tried cooking Dutch (or German) Babies, which are essentially baked pancakes. They are supposed to rise to voluminous heights, like popovers. Unfortunately, mine did not rise one millimeter, but they remained a delicious, baked eggy flavor. This Tuesday morning, Chris surprised me with a "Saturday breakfast." He has mastered country fried potatoes, which I still haven't mastered, as until now they were coming out too hard (uncooked). This morning they were perfect!
Last night for dinner I made my friend Sarah's Curried Macaroni and Cheese (just like what it sounds like), which I'd been looking forward to making for the last week. Seriously yummy!

Technical question: Much of the time, my hard returns do not show up on this blog. Even if I insert 10 hard returns, there appears to be no space between my paragraphs. Does anybody know how to fix this?

  1. you can just switch to html when you are done typing your post and put < then br then > as many times as you need to.

when stuff scares my babies, I make a point to make the noise, look at them and give them this big grin like it's the funniest thing ever. that has always worked for me. they start laughing at the noise after a while.

  2. Thanks for the great tip, Sarah! I used your laughing idea today both with ice cube noise and tearing paper noise, and I got smiles out of John.
