Outgrowing Things

Click here for video of John "back scooting." In this, relatively boring, one-and-a-half-minute video, you can see John's secondary method of travel: he lies in his back and scoots with his legs. John had begun with his feet at the couch and had already scooted 12 inches when I grabbed the camera. He scooted another 12 inches on film. John makes pretty good progress with this method. On film, you can also hear his new "lip smacking" sound. (I apologize for the strange angle. First of all, I had to film from beyond John's head in order to tempt him to scoot toward me. Second, I cannot rotate a video's orientation the way I can rotate a digital photo.)

John is now too much of a big boy for his Fisher Price Aquarium Take-Along Swing, as handed down to him from his Aunt Holly. This swing has served us faithfully, remaining in the bathroom where I can safely set John while I shower and get ready. Even though the swing can hold up to 25 pounds and John only weighs about 18, John is now trying desperately to climb out of it while he is strapped in. I used to be amazed and impressed that John was able simply to focus on the orange fish with his eyes!

This probably seems like mundane news, but it is quite strange and new to me to witness just how many tools John has grown out of in the last few weeks. I'm also just about to have to remove his play mat because he is beginning to try to pull up on the arches, which are not meant to support any weight. Below are photos of a much-younger John in these two devices that he is now outgrowing!

Almost two months old (staring at his favorite orange fish):

One month old (staring at his beloved horse, which he now manipulates in every way and throws at me):
